bass clarinet duo2022
Ambos, for bass clarinet duo, was commissioned by Égide Duo (Joshua and Stefanie Gardner) for the 2023 low clarinet festival, and is warmly dedicated to Josh and Stef. In this piece, I wanted to explore timbral ambiguity and unrecognizability through multiphonics and microtonality. The raw materials for this piece were developed in close collaboration with Josh and Stef.
To create this video, I made an audio-reactive patch in Max/MSP/Jitter. Pixels are added and dragged across the screen based on the loudness of the bass clarinets' different registers, which distort the cover page in increasingly unpredictable ways. I wanted the video to begin slowly, almost unperceivably, and gradually become surreal and hallucinatory as the piece develops.
